Story:
Shiva (Mahesh Babu) works at the Central Bureau of Intelligence. His job is to tap into the public phones to make sure they’re safe. Not satisfied enough, he develops his own software where he can try to prevent crimes before they happen, so he becomes a spy by doing that. One day, someone gets murdered which he tries to prevent but fails. He finds out this isn’t the murderer's first victim and he’s been on a killing spree all over the city. Who’s doing these murders around the city and why? How does Shiva catch the killer? This is found out in the rest of the story.
Artist Performances:
Mahesh Babu is good as usual. Typical role for him so not too hard for him to perform. In emotional scenes and his intensity during climax fight is top notch. The real show stealer is S.J. Suryahs Character. You truly see him as a psycho and sadist. Every scene he is in he spell bounds you with his performance. Rakul Preet Singh had no role to play really. Just comes five minutes before songs. Different role for Priyadarshi. He was miscast no comedy to his character (script didn’t require). Bharath and Mahesh’s parents and rest of the cast were all adequate.
Positives:
First thing first. S.J. Suryah as the sadistic killer is a huge plus for the movie. One of the best villain characterizations in recent times. Some episodes in the film work out really well. After Ciciliya song the movie picks up speed. The flashback with the villain was written really well. Pre-interval and interval episode were great. Most of the second half worked out pretty well. Especially the first twenty minutes. Mahesh trying to save his family and ambulance scene were tense and exciting. The Ladies episode was a typical unique ARM mark scene of hero trying to find the villain. When the hero and villain meet for the first time on screen it’s fireworks on the screen. The dialogues written for S.J. Suryah were superb. Climax fight and Mahesh’s intensity and emotional expressions worked out well. Also a special mention to Harris Jayaraj’s BGM it really elevated some scenes. Santosh Sivan’s cinematography also stands out. Very rich looking visuals.
Negatives:
Biggest negative of the film is that it feels incomplete and you’re wanting more. When the hero and villain meet for the first time it’s truly an awesome scene and you wished the director put some more confrontation scenes with them two. Barring the climax fight every other fight was disappointing. The much hyped roller coaster and Mahesh saving people from Boulder were definitely disappointing. The length of those scenes were under two minutes and weren’t gripping at all. VFX work looked very cheap and one is confused why the budget of this film is so high. No elevation scenes at all for Mahesh in the film which is very disappointing for his fans. After watching ARM’s earlier films like Thuppaki and Kaththi one would expect such type scenes. Love track with Rakul was silly as expected.
My final take:
Spyder is a story driven film. Barring the heroine love track, the director made sure he didn’t deviate anywhere from the film. Lead actors performances, some well written episodes and different type of script/screenplay is a huge plus to the film. On the flip side, you end up leaving the theater wanting more and might feel incomplete with the film and action episodes are disappointing barring the climax. Overall Spyder is a good time watch but just not an amazing film that it could have been.
