Today I finally got to watch the much awaited film, Spyder. Initially I was underwhelmed with the teaser and trailer because they were poorly edited and didn't showcase the best of the film.
Now talking about the plot, the protagonist ( Shiva ) is a computer genius who works at the Intelligence bureau and is clearly overqualified for his job. However he prefers his low paying desk job, mostly involving phone tapping aka mass surveillance, citing job satisfaction as reason. Things go haywire when he stumbles upon one strange call during work and messes it up unknowingly. I won't go any further with the plot since most of you are probably still planning on watching the film soon.
The film opens with a cheesy, yet an interesting scene that sets up the protagonist's daily work routine along with an opening song. The story becomes more intriguing when Shiva decides to stop the mysterious antagonist. Narration is fast paced and the director doesn't waste time on mindless action, comedy or *elevations* barring the mandatory love track which really felt forced.
Mahesh never ceases to enthrall me with his performances. His acting is very natural and charming at the same time making his character's motive seem believable. But the antagonist ( SJ Suriya ) steals the show in every scene he's in. His character has a very effective origin story establishing his arc in the story. He's creepy and has a sick sense of humor. His character has so many similarities with the Joker from Nolan's The Dark knight.
The director ( AR Murugadoss ) surely knows how to balance the tone of a film between humor and darkness. Every scene ( again, except the love track ) is vital for the story's progression at a gentle pace. His attention to detail is commendable. The character arcs are realistic and believable which is rare in telugu films. The dialogues are on point and never go overboard. However few scenes are over the top although they never fail to deliver the intended message.
The action sequences are deftly done and thankfully do not bend the laws of physics. Mahesh's body language makes them totally delightful to watch. Background score is efficacious in parts. The visual effects are clearly noticeable in many shots and that took me away from the film for a while. The dance numbers literally halt the narration.
Summarizing my overall experience of watching it, Spyder is a gripping thriller that keeps you captive till the very end of the final act. Spyder has minor flaws just like most films but definitely delivers if you know what to expect ie. an intriguing thriller.
